Sense of belonging
A sense of belonging is the feeling of being part of something greater than oneself, where you are valued, accepted, and connected to others. It’s the assurance that you have a place in the world, whether in relationships, communities, or environments, where you’re recognized for who you truly are. This sense of connection fosters emotional security, confidence, and purpose, as it helps you feel understood and appreciated by others.
At its core, belonging is about finding spaces and relationships that resonate with your identity and values, offering a supportive foundation where you can thrive. When we experience a sense of belonging, we feel empowered to be ourselves, to share openly, and to contribute to our communities with purpose.
A sense of belonging is compiled out of two main elements: COMMUNITY & PLACE IN THE WORLD
Map out your current communities
Podcast 1*
Communities are essential because they provide connection, support, and a sense of shared purpose. They remind us that we’re part of something larger than ourselves, giving us a place to grow, contribute, and feel valued. Identifying which part we take in different communities, enlightens us on our network and connection. Put a picture of yourself in the middle of a piece of paper, and list all the communities you are part of around you. These communities can a the organisation you volunteer in, or sport team, maybe some professional networks, music group, or others. Important is to list all of the communities you participate in.
Determine connection points
Podcast 2*
Once we have identified our communities, we look at how each community brings its own unique value to our lives, offering different forms of support, belonging, and purpose. Each community will have a unique set that enriches your life and has its own function for you. Look at the communities you have listed, and connect these with the points each of them represent for you. Example if you are active as volunteer, this community might bring you impact, compassion or purpose. Choose the 3 points that inmediately come to your mind when you think of your community, even if it is not a positive thought. This exercise is to reflect on what the community represents for you.
Recognize contribution and impact
Podcast 3*
Belonging isn’t just about feeling accepted—it’s about knowing that you bring value to your communities and the world. Recognizing your impact can deepen your sense of belonging, affirming your place and purpose within each space you inhabit. Look back at your mapping of the communities and their connection points, and reflect on which contribution or added value you bring to that community. Consider how your contributions have influenced or impacted. did you inspire others, or create positive atmosphere, do you offer help in organizing, no act is too small, think on all contributions you make, and once finalized go beyond your individual communities and consider how you contribute at large. Write in the center 5 sentences on how you make a difference. Example: My work in health care inspires other to prioritize their well-being. Or I offer support to the ones that feel alone by volunteering.
Set an intention for future impact
Podcast 4*
Now that you’ve identified your contributions, think about how you can amplify them. Setting an intention allows you to build upon your strengths and create a greater impact on the world around you. Your intention can be related to exploring or broaden the communities you are engaged in or focused on strenghtening the ones you currently are participating in. Setting an intention helps to strengthen both your impact and sense of belonging. Write therefore a short statement on how you’d like to move forward, for example if you want to expand to new community on sustainable lifestyle, it can be I aim to connect with people who share my passion for envirionmental sustainability and learn from their perspective or I will actively participate in community events to share my skills and knowledge, fostering deeper connections and enhancing our collective efforts. Formulating your intention will actively engage towards your future impact.
